How to moderate YouTube live chat during a prerecorded stream
Your workshop was recorded last month. Someone watching today asks where to download the worksheet. The speaker on screen keeps talking. That is the moment your chat plan matters. Sending files to YouTube handles the programme; answering today’s audience is a separate job. Decide who owns it before the broadcast starts.
Tell viewers who is present
Put the format and answer times in the description: “Recorded workshop. Our team answers in chat from 18:00 to 19:30 Warsaw time.” Use a timezone rather than expecting everyone to share your clock.
Check the recording for invitations such as “ask me now” or “today’s offer ends tonight.” Remove stale promises or explain them. A replay should not make today’s viewer guess which parts still apply.
Use the pinned message for orientation
YouTube lets the channel owner pin one chat message at a time. Pinning another replaces it; the Help page says moderators cannot pin messages. Use live chat.
Prepare a short message: “This is a recording. Team replies until 19:30. Worksheet: [link].” Pin it after chat opens. At the end of the shift, replace it with the next contact route. Repeating the same sales pitch is less useful than explaining what is happening.
Slow the flow when you cannot follow it
Slow mode sets the interval between messages from each participant. YouTube exempts the channel owner, moderators and channel members from this limit. Moderate live chat.
Try a 30-second interval if repeated messages bury questions. That number is a starting experiment, not a rule. Watch whether people can still ask follow-ups. Reducing the message rate buys reading time; it does not supply missing answers.
Where to set the chat controls
In Live Control Room, open your stream, choose Edit → Customization and find Message delay → Slow mode. Set the interval and test it from an ordinary viewer account; an owner or moderator is exempt. To assign moderators, use YouTube Studio → Settings → Community moderation → User management and add the channel URL in the appropriate moderator field, then Save. The exact labels depend on interface language. Give a helper only the permissions their role requires. Moderate live chat.
Separate answers from moderation decisions
YouTube provides standard and managing moderator roles, with different permissions. Its moderation tools include deleting messages, timeouts and hiding users. Moderate live chat.
For a two-person team, let one person answer questions and the other handle spam and abuse. Agree on a brief rule beforehand: criticism stays; personal attacks and repeated irrelevant links do not. Moderation should not become a debate about whether the recorded presenter can defend themselves.
Keep questions that need more work
If an answer needs checking, say so and save the question in your own notes. Record the topic, the relevant lesson and a promised reply route. Do not copy personal details that you do not need.
Someone may be watching an earlier segment while another viewer is near the live edge. Refer to the lesson name when answering: “In the camera setup section, use the worksheet’s second table.” This helps more than “do what he just said.”
End the shift even if the programme continues
Before leaving, post when replies resume and where unresolved questions should go. Tell the next moderator what remains unanswered. For a programme running in loops, make this handover part of the running order.
Test the chat plan during a short Looping Stream broadcast before committing to a long session. Afterward, review three things: repeated questions, interventions and promises still outstanding. Use those notes to improve the recording, description and next shift. Chat is work you can plan.
Questions
Must someone answer throughout a continuous broadcast?
Only promise the coverage you can provide. State staffed hours and a contact route for other times.
Can slow mode replace a moderator?
No. It reduces message frequency. Someone still needs to answer questions and make moderation decisions.
What should I do when nobody is available?
Update the pinned message and description. Give viewers a clear next step instead of leaving an expired promise of immediate answers.
